ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Nick Tucker
Hi, my name is Nick Tucker, and this website is where I’m exploring my evolving relationship with marketing-communications. And what it needs to become for me to stay engaged, motivated and excited about what it represents.

It’s a place where I get to outline my latest thinking. To explore what’s emerging as I get curious about a better way to connect to—and build relationship with—those we choose to serve.

A BACKDROP FOR THIS JOURNEY

I’ve been doing marcomms work since the mid ‘90s, working for clients in various parts of the world. Nothing big or fancy, no major household names. Yet as my desire to find ‘more meaningful work’ grew during the late 2000s, a series of connections and opportunities led me to find and join the Enspiral network here in New Zealand.

There I met like-minded people focused on doing work that makes the world a better place. And it’s some of the rich and emergent conversations I’ve had as a result which ultimately led to the birth of REBOOT MARKETING.

The first raw ideas surfaced in 2019, and it’s been brewing persistently ever since!

The catalyst for publication

Fast-forward to early 2022, and I had the opportunity to apply some of these ideas in the form of a ‘deeper-than-usual’ branding framework I created (OPENBRAND Wheel). I used it to support the refresh of the Happen Films brand, and the work landed well. It gave me a taste of how branding and marketing could be done, and what it felt like to connect more authentically.

After that, it was all systems go, with a first draft of the ‘REBOOT MARKETING Manifesto’ created through 2022–23 as the core ideas continued to emerge and evolve. And that’s when my old friends perfectionism and procrastination decided to show up for an extended stay…

After entertaining them on and off for the next three years, finally in 2026 the first version was published on this website for all to see.

Showing the work

And that publication comes well before this is a polished, complete idea. One of the principles I’ve finally come to accept is this: don’t perfect behind closed doors, then triumphantly reveal the ‘finished’ project. That no longer feels authentic, and it certainly wasn’t getting anything published!

Stuff like this always starts out messy and unclear and a bit rough around the edges. So I’m learning to own more of that process publicly. And I know it’ll take shape and coalesce into something better far more quickly if it’s done out in the open.

It’s published. It’ll never be perfect. It will always be changing. And that’s as it should be.

The more people who play with the ideas represented by the ‘REBOOT MARKETING Manifesto’, the more we’ll all evolve our understanding of what’s possible. What works, what doesn’t, what needs adjusting as we experiment. Which ideas to keep, and which to discard, amend or replace.

So join me in co-creating the future of marketing—an authentic, respectful, confident approach to presenting our products and services that honours everyone involved.
